Overview of Non-destructive Testing (NDT)

Non-destructive Testing (NDT) Services consist of many different testing methods, all of which do not damage the components undergoing testing. NDT is generally referred to as non-destructive examination (NDE), non-destructive evaluation (NDE), or non-destructive inspection (NDI). During construction and fabrication, NDT is used to validate materials’ quality and join processes to assess the component’s performance and reliability.

In-service Non-destructive Testing (NDT) Services inspections are used to ensure products in use have the integrity necessary for safe and reliable operations. However, NDT can also be used to troubleshoot an issue that is unable to be found otherwise. NDT identifies defects before they require expensive repair, catastrophic failure, or early replacement.

The original equipment manufacturers (OEM) use destructive testing throughout product development, such as a highly accelerated life test (HALT), to push the machine elements to failure. This type of testing validates the OEM’s product design, the selected materials, and the joining processes required to meet the expected performance and reliability. When performed during and after the manufacturing process, NDT inspection is a part of the quality and assurance management system.

What About Evaluating Components In-service?

As components and equipment age, Non-destructive Testing (NDT) Services are used during standard preventive maintenance procedures to evaluate in-service equipment’s fitness and the potential for failure. NDT provides an assessment of the current state of equipment to determine and monitor critical components. NDT provides operators the data required to make data-driven decisions for targeted action, resulting in safe and reliable service.

In-service NDT inspections are a fundamental part of any operational excellence program to detect and reduce failure, resulting in increased reliability and production. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) states: “NDT techniques provide a great deal of information about maintenance and support of concrete structures at relatively low cost.”

Utilizing NDT inspections throughout a facility’s lifecycle provides a cradle-to-grave approach to determine asset integrity. Additionally, NDT inspections provide historical data about a facility’s equipment. When conducted at specific intervals, NDT inspections save the organization millions of dollars in lost downtime by revealing threats before experiencing a failure, preventing unscheduled shutdown to facility operations.

NDT data, coupled with a Predictive Maintenance program, provides operators and maintenance personnel with accurate information to design an inspection process to predict and schedule repairs or replacements of components during routine maintenance operations.

With the above factors considered, operators can optimize facility production and increase personnel and environmental safety.
